Drug-Resistant Gonorrhoea Surges in England

Antibiotic-resistant gonorrhoea is on the rise, with England logging 17 ceftriaxone-resistant cases since January 2024—already topping the previous two years combined. Nine cases were of the ultra-resistant XDR strain. Many are linked to travel, but the asymptomatic spread is fuelling the surge too—up to 50% of cases show no symptoms, making it the STI equivalent of a stealth bomber. With treatment options dwindling, officials are trialling a meningitis jab and begging the public to rediscover condoms. Otherwise, the clap could get a lot harder to clap back at.
